Various - The Complete Motown Singles Vol. 12A : 1972 (B006XC9AUA, 2013) 5xCD

C'est l'histoire d'une traque. Il m'aura fallu près de 3 ans pour disposer de ces 12 volumes regroupant l'ensemble des singles sortis sous pavillon Motown entre 1959 et 1971. Réalisé et proposé par Hipo-Select, l'ensemble est résolument tourné vers le haut-de-gamme et les 65 CDs composant cette série constituent, à mes yeux, un must have.

Chaque volume à l'exception des deux derniers, présentent la "production" musicale d'une année. En plus de plusieurs CDs (environ 5 par box), les coffret disposent d'un livret regorgeant de détails et d'une reproduction vinyl d'époque sous forme d'un 45t.

Alors pourquoi vous en parler maintenant ? Tout simplement parce que le treizième opus de la série va sortir : l'année 1972.


Voici ce qu'en raconte Hip-O...

The Complete Motown Singles Vol. 12A: 1972 features Motown expanding into other creative areas. The Four Tops recorded “A Simple Game” in London with the Moody Blues, while the Jackson 5 and lead singer Michael respectively, covered the 1950s hits “Little Bitty Pretty One” and “Rockin’ Robin.” MJ also delivered “I Wanna Be Where You Are,” while Marvin Gaye, a year removed from his landmark album What’s Going On, recorded a politically-tinged single, “You’re The Man.”

Martha Reeves & the Vandellas released their final single, “Tear It On Down.” Smokey Robinson & the Miracles began their official goodbye with “We’ve Come Too Far To End It Now,” while Stevie Wonder had a new beginning, issuing the independently-minded single, “Superwoman” and producing his then-wife, Syreeta. The Commodores, a new group from Alabama, debuted on MoWest with the track “The Zoo (The Human Zoo).” Jr. Walker & the All Stars hit with the sublime “Walk In The Night.”

This volume features not only hits and B-sides, but rare tracks from a wide variety of artists: David Ruffin, the Supremes, the Temptations, Undisputed Truth, Blinky, Bobby Darin, the Devastating Affair, Eric & the Vikings, Thelma Houston, Rare Earth, Sisters Love, Edwin Starr, Frankie Valli, and more. And, as is expected in this series, Vol. 12A is in “album” style packaging, with a bonus 7” vinyl single – this time, with two songs by the Blackberries never actually issued as a 45. The book features two essays: an introduction by the twin brothers Russ and Ralph Terrana, two key members of the Motown engineering staff, and an overview by Susan Whitall, a longtime writer for The Detroit News, plus detailed track-by-track histories by co-producers Keith Hughes and Harry Weinger, and Grammy®-nominated Bill Dahl.

Pesonnellement je n'en ai aucun car j'ai déjà beaucoup d'albums mais il faut reconnaître que ce sont de beaux objets.

Mais pour moi en 72 (quand Gordy a déménagé Motown à L.A.) le rêve était fini...

J'ai acheté chacun de ces volumes au moment de leur sortie. Sans aucun doute les plus belles compiles du genre, mieux même que les Stax Complete Singles, par le format, la qualité des somptueux booklets et la pochette avec le 45t vinyl intégré. Vraiment de la pure merveille au niveau look, et contenant.
Après comme j'adore la Motown pas de souci mais évidemment c'est pas le genre de truc qui atterrira chez Funkiness!
En tout cas çà fait des années que j'attends la sortie de la suite. Reste à savoir combien de volumes vont venir augmenter la collection...

Sur amazon.com (j'ai opté pour le store US car d'une part il sera dispo environ 3 semaines avant le sore anglais et la parité euro / dollar est meilleure qu'euro pound. Pour les FDP, moins de 10 $... donc y a pas trop à tortiller des fesses ;-)

Oui il balance un peu vite Phil mais c'est pour ça qu'on l'aime!
Il envoie le superbe premier LP des Miracles avec Billy Griffin aux oubliettes, tout comme un peu plus tard Teena Marie, Rick James et plein d'autres jolies choses qu'il serait trop long d'énumérer!

Sans compter sur les Supremes des 70's qui justement parce qu'il n'y avait plus Diana Ross en avant ont commis quelques excellents albums. Que dire des Undisputed Truth, ou de "Masterpiece" des Temps (comme je suis fan de D. Edwards c'est ma période préférée) et de la montée en puissance de Norman Whitfield.

Ah il me faut absolument ces deux derniers volumes pour compléter la série et puis il y a vraiment des trucs qui dépotent dans le track listing! Content que le compteur se soit enfin débloqué après le Vol.11!

Gilles Petard pensait que ça n'arriverait jamais (surtout à cause des droits sur les disques de Stevie Wonder m'avait-il expliqué), alors je suis content que (pour une fois) l'histoire lui ait donné tort!
