C'est toujours un plaisir de ressortir un album que l'on n'a pas fait tourné depuis un certain temps et finalement de le redécouvrir. Après m'être réécouté le Ernie Hines que Zaïus m'a donné envie de ressortir, à côté je trouve cet album avec lui aussi une reprise du fabuleux morceau de Sam Cooke, A Change Is Gonna Come.
C'est un album qui démarre avec le titre éponyme et tout de suite nous met dans l'ambiance. A la croisée du rock, psyché, soul et funk (avec toutefois une forte consonance funk soul), Who's For The Young rappelle Sly & The Family Stone (après tout c'est la même époque et on sort du flower power et rock psyché) et même a des relents de Vanilla Fudge avec la grosse présence de l'organe et la batterie au son bien lourd les chœurs derrière et la voix qui emporte (pour ceux qui n'ont pas peur d'une approche un peu plus psyché rock que les Brothers mais avec toujours ce fond de soul, Vanilla Fudge vaut le détour et par exemple le superbe reprise You Keep Me Hanging On - ok je diverge un peu quoi que...). Le reste de l'album est dans le même esprit, une musique que je qualifierais de libératrice, je ne sais pas pourquoi mais je le ressens comme ça, ça doit être l'époque qui veut ça...
J'ai trouvé un résumé de leur bio sur le net:
"This group of musicians and vocalist came to together in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968, with a unique live sound blending funk, soul, rock, funkadelic, and smooth vocals. The group was organized by John “Kousi” Harris from Pensacola, Fl., formerly of the group J Robinson and The Dynamics who recorded on the MALA label, and Jerry Jones a local Memphis Vocalist. Curtis Johnson, and brother Harold “Quake” Johnson had formerly been members of The Chips/ Astors, that recorded with Stax Records. The musicians had been playing locally with several groups, when John and Jerry had and idea to join these different talents to create a new sound. The group was self managed, with Curtis doing the booking and creating tours throughout Memphis night clubs, and on the Florida, and Alabama Gulf Coast. The group also travelled north to the Michigan area, but spent most of their time in the lower south east. In 1970, the group produced (with Fame Records) and recorded an album that was released on the Capitol Records label, “Who’s For The Young”. In 1972, the group disbanded, allowing some members of the group to join the “new” Bar-Kays, when the group was re-organized, following the death of Otis Redding and all but 2 members of The “Original” Bar-Kays."
Donc ça démarre par Who's For The Young:
Ça enchaîne par A Change Is Gonna Come (pas sur le même tempo que Sam!!! et Ernie Hines). Je trouve cette version excellente aussi, pas dans le même esprit, on va dire plus optimiste finalement que l'approche de Sam Cooke, on sent le changement se rapprocher...
Take Me Back:
Life, Dreams, Death (tout un programme!!! c'est vrai que cela démarre de façon apocalyptique puis se calme!)
Bref à mes oreilles un bien bel album qui sort un peu (pas tant que cela, la preuve avec les extraits) des sentiers battus mais qui vaut le détour...
