"A killer collection of funk and soul from an ultra-hip Bay Area label of the 70s – Oakland's enigmatic BROWN DOOR RECORDS – headed up by Funk maestro Marvin Holmes! The music's got a beautifully sunny vibe – all the best Bay Area elements of the time, reflected in the scene-crossing, genre-stepping modes that often made the East Bay way more exciting than anything going on in San Francisco – particularly in the cool crossbreeding that would happen between Berkeley, Oakland, and other communities. Holmes' cuts here are a great example of that – still the funk and jazz of his late 60s music for bigger labels, but also pretty stretched-out and open too – filled with an all-encompassing spirit that rivals the best music from the Fantasy studios at the time – but with a hipper, indie vibe all the way through. This spirit also steps over to the work by other artists on the collection, too – and is told in the rich notes and images included with the heavy booklet – both in English and Japanese, at a level that shows the SHOUT PRODUCTIONS folks stepping into Numero territory. Très intéressant.

Je remarque que ce CD reprend :

• "Find Yourself" dans la version du single Kimberly 104 de 1972 et non tel qu'il avait été réenregistré en 1975 pour le LP Brown Door / Konkord 6581.
• et "Feel so good" de 1986 (MCA-23619).

c'est-a-dire deux titres pas vraiment d'origine Brown Door.

Personnellement je ne connais que son excellent album de 69 "Oh Oh The Dragon..."

Je remarque que ce CD reprend :

Bonne remarque car sur la compile de Luv N' Haight, Bay Area Funk, qui reprend ce morceau, vu que je ne l'ai pas, je n'ai pas vérifié si la version était celle de 1972 ou 1975, c'est une découverte et une tuerie dansante.
Rien que pour ce titre "Find Yourself", je vais craquer pour cette compile, ce morceau me donne des frissons quelque soit la version, c'est juste du FUNK CHAUD, non bouillant mais alors qui fait suinter, vibrer les sens.

Mes coups de cœur à l'écoute des extraits se sont confirmés, une compile qui sur les premiers titres ne m'a pas fait décoller, bien que cela soit bon, mais pour mes goûts, pas transcendant
Et à partir de "Kimani-Mdogo" (N°9) c'est le début des réjouissances (bien sûr toujours en relation avec mes faiblesses sonores). Et Nirvana atteint dès "Find Yourself" (N°10 / N°11) que je me mettrait volontiers en intraveineuse et puis cette part2 est à tomber de bonheur groovesque. Enchainement avec frissons sensuels sur "Love Yo' Love" (N°12), mon autre faiblesse "Goin' Home" (N°15).

Un bien bel objet, ne pas hésiter à se le procurer, il en vaut l'écoute et en plus un superbe livret bien complet.

Je vois qu'il y a une photo du guitariste Eugene Blacknell qui a gravé quelques petits singles tout à fait sympathiques sur Boola-Boola et Seaside.

EDIT : j'enfonce une porte ouverte !
Funk-o-logy avait déjà évoqué ce guitariste avec son single Seaside 4111, il y a deux ans.

Nota : on voit aussi des photos de Dorothy Morrison qui elle aussi a eu les honneurs de funk-o-logy avec son single Brown Door 6580, je radote, Bluesy l'avait déjà dit !

Si je devais recommander une compile c'est bien celle-ci avec son superbe livret composé de photos d'époque et puis certains titres sont tout simplement magiques.
En parlant de compile, j'ai craqué pour le gospélisant Overdose Of The Holy Ghost... AMEN.
